La Cienega Vineyard

Alexander Valley

About Us

La Cienega Vineyard uses the latest, proven viticulture techniques as well as sustainable farming practices to grow the best quality Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. This involves close supervision by the owners directly in the vineyard and by the region’s top vineyard management company. In close coordination with the winemaker, La Cienega Vineyard has sustained reserve-quality production from bud to harvest for half a decade.

History

La Cienega Vineyard was founded in 1997 by Werner and Helle Siegert. In 1994 the Siegerts purchased a remarkable parcel of land in the southern part of Sonoma’s renowned Alexander Valley. In 1997, with the help of Redwood Empire Vineyard Management Company, they planted 20 acres with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The first harvest produced 35 tons of fruit in 2001, which are sold to a prominent Alexander Valley winery. Top production reached 65 tons in 2003. Production is expected to reach 55 tons as the vines continue to mature.

Grape Details

La Cienega’s prime hillside terrain includes up to 20% inclinations and top altitudes of approximately 400 feet. The vines are trained on a VSP trellis system with 9x5 spacing. Premium rootstock consists primarily of 110R, with some 1103P. The clone is #7. It is irrigated between May and October using a drip system, which is backed up by a 10,000 gallon water tank.

The Vintners

In addition to being long-time wine consumers and connoisseurs, the Siegerts completed four semesters of viticulture programs at SRJC. As members of the Alexander Valley Wine Growers Association and Sonomy County Wine Grape Commission, they attend countless seminars on the latest techniques in viticulture. They consult the area’s finest fertilization and viticulture experts to maintain the best possible wine-growing practices.
